The direction of my work can best be described as Ornamental Organic Abstraction. Macro-micro themes in my work are more suggestive rather than spelled out. My use of small shapes, in painted, drawn and collaged passages, create tensions that imply teeming biological cellular activity which fill the obvious and hidden passages of patterns Layers of concentric shapes within shapes create textural movements that seem to grow out of the canvas, towards the viewer’s perceptual field, and leave a poetic impression on the eyes in the way a perfume scent permeates the olfactory senses. Producing obsessive and hypnotic surfaces are my way to engage and keep the viewer in an ongoing visual dialogue with my artwork. Some of the works shown here are more abstracted and some are more representational. In my recent compositions, the critical mass of visual relationships occur in such a way as to allow the viewer to revisit the work and experience it in a different way each time. The result is a kind of natural pictorial fiction that takes on many plastic and changing identities. The media employed in executing this work are traditional, including acrylic and oil, and combined with more current media such as digital applications and Xerox transfers. Kathleen King 2006 |
