Around the Coyote Supports Emerging Chicago Artists

Fall 2003 Artist in Residence - Don Lambert

This year's artist-in-residence is Donald Lambert. His exhibition, "The Changing Landscape" will be on view from August 29 to September 26. His residency runs to August 28.

The "Changing Landscape" is a site-specific installation, which will raise questions regarding diplomacy and the balance of power. The artist achieves this by juxtaposing the interface of common children's puzzles and game boards with an interactive political map of the world.
Viewers entering ATC Space will find a working 12' x 24' floor puzzle based on the most current, available political world map. The puzzle will consist of a grid of 32 individual pieces derived from longitudinal/latitudinal measurements taken in 30 degree increments. Each piece will measure 3 square feet and be made of plywood.

During his residency, Lambert will also host interactive sessions with community members. During these sessions, he will video tape people interacting with the map and rearranging it according to their personal whim or political ideology. This video will become an integral part of the exhibition.

"The selection process was very difficult," says Olga Stefan, Executive Director of ATC. "This year we had more proposals than ever before (a total of 30) and among them were some that were excellent. In selecting Donald Lambert's, I not only considered the quality of the proposal and his previous work, but also the subject matter that he is exploring and its relevance to contemporary politics. I think that 'The Changing Landscape' promises to be a very topical and engaging project."

Lambert, who lives in Chicago, has an MFA in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute.
