The Around the Coyote Gallery is excited to announce our 2nd annual Mary Beth Cregier Memorial Photo Exhibition. The emerging photographers and their works in this show were chosen by curator Catherine Edelman of the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago, Illinois. Artists were chosen for the excellence and originality of their aesthetic and conceptual vision, as mobilized through the photographic medium.
Jorge Manghi
One goal of this exhibition is to honor the legacy of former Around the Coyote Director
Mary Beth Cregier, who was known for her passionate dedication to the artists of Chicago's emerging arts community. As ATC Director, Cregier's vision helped make ATC into the dynamic and vital arts center that it is today. Mary Beth is remembered for her wide-ranging talent as a photographer, as she possessed the rare ability to photograph all things well.
Around the Coyote is pleased to have Catherine Edelman curate this year's show. As owner and director of Catherine Edelman Gallery, she has created one of the leading galleries in the Midwest devoted exclusively to the art of photography. Since 1987, her gallery has exhibited prominent contemporary photographers alongside new and young talent, showcasing a broad range of subject matter and photographic techniques.
Philip Dembinski
Along with selecting the nineteen photographers for the exhibition, Catherine Edelman selected the recipient of the
Best in Show Award at the exhibition's opening reception,
Phillip Dembinski. Given in honor of Mary Beth Cregier, this $1000 prize, sponsored by Philip L Rothman, is meant as both a symbolic and financial gesture of support. As exemplified by Cregier herself, supporting artists both financially and through providing professional opportunities for exhibiting is the cornerstone of Around the Coyote's mission.

About Mary Beth Cregier
Mary Beth Cregier, former director of Around the Coyote, was known for her passionate dedication to the artists of Chicago's Wicker Park community. As ATC director, not only did she provide the organization with unparalleled leadership, but she steered ATC through organizational and financial difficulties. Her vision helped make ATC into the dynamic and vital arts center that it is today. Mary Beth is also remembered for her wide-ranging talent as a photographer, as she possessed the rare ability to photograph all things well.
2008 Muralist-in-Residence, Jesse Brown
Debuting at the opening night reception is a new mural in our gallery stairwell from
Jesse Brown, our
2008 Muralist-in-Residence. The concept of the mural is to explore the relationship
between shapes and space, as well as the use of repetition to create pattern. The mural is non-linear, can be viewed from many angles and has no start or end point.
Jesse Brown is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Chicago, IL. His work has been exhibited at galleries in Los Angeles, Seattle, Portland, Chicago, New York, Tokyo, Berlin, London and Paris. www.papervspencil.com
