Around the Coyote's 7th annual Winter Festival Film and Video program this year honors Split Pillow for their diligent and outstanding work in the Chicago film and video community. Each night we will showcase an hour of short films and videos produced by Split Pillow, from the past and present.
Split Pillow, a 501(c)3 non-profit, selects four of the Midwest's most promising talents to direct three short films per year. The filmmakers rotate every season or project and tend to be a mix of film students and independent filmmakers, most based in and around Chicago. By providing these emerging filmmakers with the resources and opportunities to develop and produce original collaborative works of motion picture for the public, Split Pillow has become a driving force in the innovation of filmmaking, and a partner in the Around the Coyote mission to support emerging art in all its forms.
Split Pillow is specifically dedicated to producing works influenced by the Chicago aesthetic. Heavily influenced by the rules and philosophies of improvisation and the Exquisite Corpse, all Split Pillow works are the result of collaboration amongst multiple filmmakers, resulting in unique, provocative motion pictures. Around the Coyote is pleased to highlight the work of Split Pillow, our co-conspirator in the never ending quest to promote and advocate for the emerging arts of Chicago.
Split Pillow board members: Jason Stephens, CJ Dugan, Dennis Belogorsky, Jennifer Thornton, Jacky Lewkovich, Andrea Mortensen.
Split Pillow films that will be shown throughout the festival:
Hot Coffee directed by Dave Belden

Over the last few years Chicago's alternative literary scene has experienced exponential growth. As a number of new literary journals and magazines have sprung up, local bloggers and zinesters have risen to national prominence. With that in mind, Around the Coyote is expanding its long running poetry showcase to reflect this vibrant scene.
Al Burian has put out over a dozen issues of the influential zine Burn Collector. He is also in the band Milemaker and is a regular contributor to Punk Planet and Lumpen.
Rob Christopher has lived in Chicago since 1993. His selfpublished "exploded novel" of Random Literature, 100 Spinning Plates , is available online at www.randomcha.net as well as at fine bookstores like Powell's in Portland and Quimby's. In his spare time he watches far too many movies, mixes up retro cocktails (the Mai Tai being his specialty), and writes more stuff.
Emerson Dameron produces the zine Wherewithal, contributes to a host of other scrappy publications, and plays records on WLUW-FM. With Nell Taylor, he founded the Chicago Underground Library, which you should ask him about. http://loudwire.net/~emerson.
A.B. Drea is the editor and publisher of The Banana King, the Up Front editor for Venus, and a columnist for UR Chicago. She's freelanced for TimeOut Chicago and BlackBook magazine among others, and her fiction has been published in The Chicago Reader, Pistil, and Columbia College's 2005 Story Week Reader.
Achtongue Fingers has been self-publishing since 2001. Aside from publishing drawings, poems, short stories, and essays in a few indiscriminate book stores, he also enjoys the art of the accident by littering copies of his work in random places such as between the pages of choice books within public places. He is currently working on an event based on his short story, "Morbida Memento Mori" dubbed "LE TEMPS DETRUIT TOUT".
Andrew Huff is one of the founders of Gapers Block, a Chicago-centric webzine, is editor of mmmChicago, and has a personal blog at www.me3dia.com.
Eric lab Rat writes and performs with groups such as Shahbaz Review, Grammatical Era, Gentlemen Callers, White Kids With Forties, Righteous Reverends Revival, Lozenge Improv, and Manifest Theatre. He is currently a dj on WLUW 88.7, but you may have heard him on Red Line Radio, WPBR, or the Wizard. His work can be found in The Banana King, Time All at Once, and The 2nd Hand.
Liz Mason writes Caboose, a zine with topics such as Karaoke, Improvement and Ridiculousness. She is part of the all-girl publishing collaborative Hotcakes and her work has appeared in The Chicago Tribune, workingfortheman.com, Reglar Wiglar, and Lumpen.
Jonathan Messinger is books editor of TimeOut Chicago, co-publisher of Featherproof Books, host of the Dollar Store Reading Series and editor of THISisGRAND, a blog about public transit.
Billy Roberts has spent the last 5 years in Chicago, making a fortune in the zine racket by pawning off his own writings (Proof I Exist). He founded Loop Distro in May of 2002, collecting zines from all over the Chicagoland area and selling them at inflated prices. www.loopdistro.com
Mimi Smartypants is the pseudonym of a 30-ish writer, editor, mother, and problem drinker who lives in West Rogers Park. She wrote her first book, The World According To Mimi Smartypants, entirely by accident. She keeps her diary online at smartypants.diaryland.com.
Brandon Wetherbee founded Foul, Inc., which has put out nearly 20 issues of Foul (the zine) and 2 years worth of Foul Radio. His current projects are The Machine, a monthly cultural magazine about Chicago, and The Machine Radio which airs Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 pm and is archived at www.themachinemedia.com.
Alanna Zaritz is the founder of AZ Fakebook which infrequently puts out the art and literature zine Cheatsheet.
with music by Walter Meego
Walter Meego was formed in 1998 by Justin S., Colin Y. and Pat P. as a platform for creativity to run rampant, with no boundaries. The band is completed by turntablist Jarret S. who joined in 2005 to replace the very busy Pat P.
Kim Alpert aka Rev. Fortune aka Jasper Von Houten has a degree in digital media and a background in classical art, world music, and carpentry. A regular on the poetry scene a few years past, Kim has been writing again and looks forward to this opportunity to read her new work. She has curated film, video, and music for Around the Coyote for the past two years, opened the Binary Mine art space, worked aggressively in the advertising world, and was recently fortunate enough to find true love.
Kristiana Colón is a student at the University of Chicago. She has competed in the 2003 and 2004 Louder Than a Bomb Chicago Teen Poetry Slam and the 2003 Brave New Voices National Teen Poetry Slam. She toured Chicago with Grammatical Era and London with the WordWide poetry slam team, which was featured at London's first inner-city youth slam. She has been featured on Power 92, WBEZ Chicago Public Radio, WGN Radio, and WZRD. She recently released her independently produced spoken word CD entitled Who Haunts Eden and was featured on HBO's fifth season of Def Poetry Jam. She is pursuing a career in literary and performance art.
Uriel Crumb has spent the last few years traveling the country, writing and performing his spiritual poetry.
Charlie Newman has published five books of poetry (three on Wasteland Press, and two on Fractal Edge) and three CDs. He is the host of WZRD's weekly Poetry Circus show as well as readings at The Cafe and DvA Gallery.
Samantha Skinner recently put out her first collection of poetry, "You May Waltz to your Doom in Sanguine Stained Shoes"
with music by Dove Rock
Dove Rock is a feminist poet and emcee. In 2005 she released her debut album "Sylvia Plath Easybake Oven" on her own Iron Vagina Records. She has graced the stages of the Hot House, the Guild Complex, the Texas Ballroom, the Vans Warped Tour as well as colleges and clubs across the country. She will be performing with Lamon Manuel, Itch13, Sean the Pawn and Il Subliminal.
